There is actually a crapload going on in the game but you would never know unless you REALLY paid attention. sort of like a callback (or homage, maybe?) to the Doom days where you know it was about some demonic invasion on mars but you really didn't care or need to know. It is more about the experience itself than why exactly all the events on screen are happening. The thing I really like about it is how the story is pretty much completely ambiguous and in the background for pretty much the whole game, as oppose to games these days (and during the HL and HL2 days) with ham fisted in your face storylines.
